Lakeside Drive Community Garden
Lakeside Drive Community Garden (LDCG) is an award-winning joint initiative between Charles Darwin University and the local Darwin community. The community garden idea was initiated in 2008 by the Charles Darwin University Talloires students. Located on a two acre site on Lakeside Drive in Alawa, the garden functions as a demonstration site for tropical food production and sustainable living education in Darwin. See our Photo Gallery.
The Lakeside Drive Community Garden provides students with the chance to gain experience in a real world project that involves development of graduate attributes such as:
- Teamwork
- Communication skills
- Leadership skills
- Social Responsibility
It enables students to gain knowledge relevant to the courses they are studying (e.g. business planning, community liaison, environmental management).
CDU Talloires also foresees strengthened university-community links through the establishment of a garden. This is in line with the Talloires Declaration and CDU’s vision to make the university a more open and welcoming place, which contributes to community engagement.
CDU Talloires hopes to expand capacity through partnerships with community organisations and businesses believing that these community partnerships will enhance the success and benefits of the Community Garden Project. Groups such as Food Care NT and local businesses in the community have shown support for the garden.
